My name is Maggi and I am a Gold Star Mom. This means, simply, that I have buried a soldier who was my son. I look to receive donation funding to earn a certificate to teach a meditation program to Veterans.
My son, SSGT Edward F Greiner, Jr was killed on March 6, 2012 in a motorcycle accident outside of Ft Bragg N.C. . He was returning to base to redeploy to Afghanistan and do his job to bring his best friend and commrades home from the escalating conflict and violence. He was a carreer USArmy Soldier, Paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne and had been in service since 2004. He had already completed 2 deployments and was volunteering for a 3rd.
I am a Yoga and MeditationTeacher and have been teaching for the last 8 years. It is not a get rich career choice but it does afford me peace and the opportunity to shape lives through mindfulness and movement. After the death of my son I was introduced to a program for teachers that offered tools for recovery from Trauma through Yoga. I was scholarshipped into that program at Kripalu Institute in Massachusetts and it started my own healing as well as my mission to bring this to the military any way I could. I am still here, living with the pain of losing a child. My yoga and meditation practice has afforded me the privilege of finding a meaningful and purposeful outlet for my grief. To take my tragedy and bring light and honor to my son's memory through teaching is my passion.
I have been trained by a program called Warriors at Ease and met some of the most amazing teachers. My next goal and the reason for this funding request is to continue my training at Kripalu Institute in May and learn the skills of teaching iRest meditation with the qualified instructors. I have seen first hand the evidence of healing with this method of deep relaxation most remarkably with veteran Marines and retired military as well as the veterans and active duty I have been honored to teach.
I have a consistent Veterans Yoga class in my home town as a result of my persistence, training and the space offered by a local VFW. My dream is to open a yoga studio that specializes in Trauma Sensitive Yoga and can offer a place of safety and peace to anyone seeking. the next step to that end is continued training.
