Cariads last chance

Donation protected
I am shannon. My younger sister cariad (19) is in the Royal Brompton hospital in London. She is in a critical condition in intensive care fighting for her life as a result of an overdose in an attempt to take her own life.   Unfortunaley, on the 31st October my younger sister aged 19 took an overdose. She has suffered with mental health for a while but has been let down by multiple professionals on a number of occasions. A local doctor even laughed in her face claiming she was "too young to have depression" and dismissed her without any form of help. She started to lose hope after several attempts of reaching out because every time she thought she was finally getting somewhere she was let down again.  She then felt like she had no way out and on the 31st October she attempted to end her life. She was unconscious for approximately 12 hours before we became aware of the overdose and immediately called an ambulance. Unfortunately, as a result of being unconscious and in a coma for so long she has suffered several seizures each lasting longer than 5 minutes and she has vomited and inhaled it causing it to fill her lungs. This then restricted her oxygen intake and led to other complications such as numerous infections, the main one being pneumonia which is life threatening in itself. Since the 1st November she's remained in a coma on the intesive care unit where each day she was fighting for her life in the Royal Gwent hospital (South Wales). Due to the amazing quality of care they provided, for the most part she remained in a stable condition however on Friday the 8th (day 8 of her coma) we received a phone call from the ICU unit asking us to go down there immediately as she had taken a very bad turn for the worst. We arrived and was told by the consultant that the ventilator in which she had been relying on to do all her breathing for her wasn't working anymore because her lungs had failed and wasn't taking the oxygen anymore.  This put her in a life threatening position because if her body was unable to take oxygen she would die. They tried everything they could but they quickly established that she was far too unwell and required equipment that our hospital in Wales didn't have and at this point she was only given a 2% chance of survival and even then if she did survive there is a high chance of her being brain dead. This was heart breaking as she has always been a very bright and caring girl. Her job was a carer and she made such a positive impact on people's lives it was a shame to see hers be wasted almost and let down by so many people.  A full hospital team from the Royal Brompton hospital in London rushed to the Royal Gwent hospital in South Wales and arrived in order to perform a major procedure in order to help my sisters chance of survival. The procedure involved them using a machine that they brought down from their hospital called an ECMO machine. The purpose of this is to insert two large tubes into her body where they are then placed either side of her heart. Those tubes would then drain her blood, run it through the machine where it would be thinned and then oxygenated and it would then loop back into her body.   Unfortunately, our team aren't trained to use this machine so she had to be transferred to the Royal Brompton hospital within hours of having the procedure. This would mean that she can continue use of the machine for a further two weeks minimum.  This is her very last chance of survival as EVERY other method has been tried and failed.  Obviously as a worried family we need to be there in London with her to offer our full support. We live a good 3 hour drive away from this hospital so it's essential we are near by given the circumstances and severity of her condition as we can be called into her at any given second just like we was at the Gwent hospital back in Wales. In order to spend 1 week with her it has cost us £800 for the most basic of accomodation and given the fact that she will be here for a while we do not possibly have the funds to stay out here and be with her which breaks our hearts. We are asking for any contributions no matter how big or small as this can enable us to keep close to our loved one during this very difficult and emotional time.  Any contributions will be greatly appreciated. Many thanks, Shannon.
