My Dad needs a nursing home.

On Sept 4th, 2018, I found my dad unconscious on the floor of his apartment. Apparently he had been there in the area of 24-48 hours. Luckily he was still breathing, and a 911 call later we got him to Henserson Hospital. Turns out he had suffered a stroke and fell down, in the process breaking his leg, hip, and fracturing his neck.

What's happened over the next few weeks has been difficult to process. The stroke has caused massive memory loss, extreme confusion, and perhaps accelerated some dementia/Alzheimer's symptoms. In his confused mental state, he even removed a catheter that required surgery to fix. Let that sink in for second. He has been learning how to walk again, how to eat again, even how to use the toilet. His brain doesn't process things like hunger anymore either and requires someone to feed him on a schedule. Because of the urethra damage, he also has bladder issues.

He has little to no memories. In fact, he recognizes me, but not who I am or why I visit every day. He doesn't remember being a Marine. He doesn't remember being married. He has no recollection of his hobbies or passions. He doesn't remember any of his 3 children or 4 grandchildren. His entire 85 year old life has been reduced to the four walls around him and living in this exact moment as he cannot recall anything from his past.

Its been over 5 weeks, and he is showing signs of decline, not improvement. We are currently in a rehab facility, but at this point my dad requires 24 hour "memory care".

Memory care facilities are different in that the facility is "locked down" so that patients don't wander off. They have trained staff to handle his mental state. More importantly its more of a long term plan. The truth is my dad is never going home. These places that specialize in his condition are few and far between. We reached out to the VA, but they don't have any facilities available. We applied for Medicaid coverage, but the approval process can take months.

My income alone doesn't begin to cover his bills and mine. Memory care facilities are typically $3000-5000 a month, and my hope is that if I can raise $10,000 it literally buys me the 3 months I need that Medicaid will hopefully kick in and cover the rest of his expenses.

I have never asked anyone for a dollar in my life. I barely know how to ask for a ride. If you know me, I have always been a generous and charitable person. You would also know that my Dad is my closest family member and I love him dearly. So it is with a great swallowing of my pride that I post this, hoping that the universe will pay back what I've given all my life.  My dad deserves a chance to be cared for in a safe environment where he is respected and treated with kindness.

Please help me achieve that. If you can not donate, please share this with others. If it is shared to the power of 3 people, this should reach 10,000 people of which I would only need $1 per person.  Any fund's not used for his care and wellbeing will be donated to other's in need or to provide a quality of life for those without my resources.
