My BRCA 2 Journey

Hi everyone, my name is Sammantha Finch. As many of you know I recently found out I am a carrier of a gene called a BRCA 2 which is a mutation in my gene. This means my risk of breast cancer and ovarian are much higher than a person who does not have this mutation.
In the fall of 2019 I had my genetic testing done, which showed I was positive for BRCA2, recently in July I had a “lump scare” where they found a lump in my right breast after having an MRI and I felt like my worst fears had become my reality watching my mother go through a double mastectomy at a young age was a very scary experience and I’m sure more so for her than me. As I watched her go through it I never wanted to have to experience this myself. As I waited for my results I couldn’t help but wonder all the things in life I had still yet to experience, traveling, child birth, getting married, I felt as though all those dreams were just disappearing into thin air and there was nothing I could do about it.
After what felt like the longest days of my life I finally heard back from my doctor stating that for now.. The key words being “For now” the lump is benign, as they’re telling me this all I can think of is what the actual hell does “for now mean”?
Today I met with my plastic surgeon and have decided after a lot of thought and research to go along with getting a double mastectomy myself, with all the stresses in this life one thing I don’t want to ever have to stress about is cancer. Just waiting must have been one of the most horrible experiences in my life. I would never wish this kind of situation on anyone.
So it’s with regret that I am reaching out to friends and family and the public to help me with the cost of expenses during this difficult time in my life. With COVID and my many appointments I have only been able to work part time which is getting us by. Once I have my surgery I will be out of work for a month or so with no income coming in for myself. Anything anyone could donate would be greatly appreciate even just a share would mean the world to me, if anyone has any questions please feel free to reach out to me. At this point I am an open book. Thank you.
