I have dedicated my life to the bowling community and plan to do so for as long as I can. My name is Scott Mills, and I have Stage 4 Kidney failure. Type-1 Diabetes has been a part of my life since 1963; I was 4 years old… This disease has affected my life and those around me for 51 years; including my Father who passed away at the young age of 40 from Kidney failure, my Brother who was diagnosed with Diabetes in 1970, my family who have helped me throughout the years, and my career as an owner at Don Mitchell Pro Shops.
My love for bowling began in 1966 when I joined my first youth league at Bowl-O-Mat (an Indianapolis bowling center since closed). I have bowled in a league every year since, that’s 48 years – but whose counting. Bowling had become such a deep-rooted passion of mine that I began to work for the Royal Pin Leisure Centers in August of 1976 – as a candy striper no less. After graduating high school in 1978 from Arsenal Tech High School I began my journey as an employee for Don Mitchell Pro Shops.
Working in and for the Bowling Industry for over 35 years has been a very rewarding journey for me. I have provided knowledge, service, and mentoring to thousands of Indianapolis (and surrounding) bowlers from beginners to professionals. This dedication to service and the gratitude I have received from these bowlers is what has kept me in the business.
The Bowling business has been a great part of my life, but my children are my world. I have three wonderful adult “children” that have given me all the blessings a Father could have. My oldest daughter, Monica, currently lives in China while she raises her family and continues her passion for educating children of the world. My middle son, Derek, who lives in Indianapolis, has a Masters Degree in Architecture and is on his way to becoming a Licensed Architect. And lastly, my youngest son, Dustin, lives in Florida while he continues his education to become a Licensed Veterinarian.
In June of 2011 I was diagnosed with Stage 3 Kidney Disease (Chronic Kidney Disease) – something that had been my worst fear since I turned 40 (the age my Father passed away from Kidney Disease). Because of my long history of Type-1 Diabetes the Kidney Disease progressed rather quickly. September of 2011 my family, and I (with strong advice from my doctors) decided to have surgery so I could begin Peritoneal Dialysis. On October 23 of 2011 I started my first treatment of Peritoneal Dialysis on my son, Dustin’s, birthday.
Since then, I have continued to give myself in-home dialysis treatments four times a day. I am no longer able to work full time, to travel, or to live my life as I always have. Now, those of you that know me know I am not down, I do not regret the life I have lived and I wouldn’t change it for a minute. If there is one thing I would like most for those of you reading my story is that: I am a proud Father of 3, a Grandfather of 3 with the 4th on the way, a league bowler, a hard worker, a honest and giving person, a mentor, and a life that wants to keep on living…
I am currently trying to become a candidate for new kidneys and a pancreas. To be free of Diabetes and Kidney Disease… Now that would be my perfect game.
