MY IVF JOURNEY

Donation protected
Hi,

My name is Rachelle. I’m 32 years old and Mum to an almost 2 year old boy named Dylan.

I never thought I would be in the position to be doing this but here goes...

I have saved hard since I was 18 years old.

Most people want a house and a car, but for me it was a family of my own. I never thought I would have that chance.

When I was 26 I had a mass on my pancreas which I was told was extremely rare for someone my age, luckily for me it was benign and I had surgery to remove it.  After my surgery I was told they had to remove my spleen also and that this would affect my immune system for the rest of my life, but that I would still be able to have children. I was so grateful that it wouldn’t limit my chance of having the family I’d always wanted.

A couple of years later I started my IVF journey. Every cycle made me nervous and anxious, would this cycle be my chance to finally become a Mum?

I underwent 2 IUI’s, both failed, an IVF cycle that resulted in a chemical pregnancy and then I finally got my dream, I was pregnant!

I was so worried all throughout my pregnancy, but it turned out fantastically and I had the most beautiful little boy who has such a zest for life, and is always so happy. My beautiful Dylan.

Now let’s backtrack to his horrendous birth...

When he was delivered via emergency caesarean, after a very difficult obstructed labour due to bubs huge head getting stuck, the obstetrician accidentally and unknowingly nicked my bowel.

I ended up EXTREMELY sick and developed Peritonitis. I was in hospital for 3 weeks instead of a few days, but I still left the hospital happy and with a smile on my face because I was so grateful that I had my beautiful son, and he was healthy.

After he turned one all I wanted to do was expand my little family and give him a sibling, so back on the IVF roller coaster I went.

I had 4 cycles of IVF, all of which resulted in negative blood tests. Then, amazingly the fifth one worked! I was pregnant! After months and months of trying and putting my body through all that IVF entails, I was finally pregnant!

I was so happy and excited to be the Mum of a newborn again and my little boy was going to be a big brother!

Everything was going really well, I had my 12 week ultrasound and everything was perfect. Seeing my baby on the screen during that ultrasound left me overjoyed.

Four days later things took a turn for the worst. Out of the blue I got a raging fever and was extremely sick so I went to the hospital. I had developed an infection which turned into Septicaemia and that’s when things took a tragic turn.

Early the next morning the doctor performed an ultrasound, there was no heartbeat. My baby had passed away.

My heart shattered into a million pieces and I spent the next 3 days in hospital being treated for the infection, waiting for the doctors to start medication to deliver my baby.

A couple of days later they induced my labour, which went terribly, ended in me losing consciousness, several litres of blood and emergency surgery. To top it off, my baby was accidentally discarded and I wasn’t able to see her or have her cremated as I had planned.

Not a day goes by where I don’t think about the baby I lost, but the one thing that keeps me going is my little boy and the dream of still being able to have another precious baby and making him a big brother.

There is nothing that means more to me in life than having a loving family.

I am now at the point where I need some help, anything would be greatly appreciated and I will be forever grateful.

Thank you,

Rachelle
