Musical Instruments and Equity

Hi, I'm Lauren Schwartz and I'm a music teacher at the Visitacion Valley Middle School in San Francisco. In my classroom, I have drum sets, bass guitars, electric guitars, keyboards, acoustic guitars and ukuleles. My students get to play whichever instrument they are drawn to, and when school is in session, my classroom is like a magical musical wonderland filled with learning, collaboration, hope and joy.
When COVID-19 hit our country in March, it exposed an incredible amount of inequity. My heart was broken when I realized that none of my students had their own instruments at home. This made it incredibly difficult to teach them in a virtual setting, but more than that, it made me so sad to know that they no longer had access to something they loved.
Having your own music instrument should not be a luxury. The pandemic has taken so much away from my students and I want to find a way to give them something back. This is where you come in.
I need your help to buy each of my students their own instrument that they can keep forever. This will be a gift that will enable these amazing young people to express themselves and be creative during a really difficult time.
I've asked my students which instruments they would want to have at home to keep forever. My goal is to raise $20,000.00 to purchase the following:
- 21 Electric Keyboards ($300 each)
- 12 MIDI Keyboards ($100 each)
- 8 Acoustic Guitars ($200 each)
- 50 Ukuleles ($80 each)
- 10 Electric Guitars with Amps ($330 each)
- 8 Electric Bass with Amps ($330 each)
Would you be willing to help me honor my students by supporting this fundraiser? I believe in the power of music and I am personally contributing $400.
Any support will be appreciated. Please feel free to share this with other people who want to fight against the inequities that my students are facing in this climate and to give the gift of music.
Love and Respect,
Lauren Schwartz
