Multi-service community church in Khayelitsha.

This unassuming structure in the middle of the crime-ridden suburb of Harare, Khayelitsha, Cape Town, South Africa is the start of a dream of a lady called Thembisa. She is the daughter of my dear friend Elizabeth, whom I met over 30 years ago in Cape Town. Thembisa is a mother, wife of a preacher and a preacher herself.
This area has a high level of drug and alcohol abuse as well as dangerous gangs and shootings. The youth tend to drop out of school and stray down the wrong path. They see so much despair it's overwhelming but their strong belief in God makes them determined to struggle on and fulfil the dream of using the church to run a pre-school where children will, from a young age, be taught about the Bible, sing, dance and tell stories. This, they believe, will give them the confidence knowing that they are cared for and loved and that each and every one of them matter. The outside structure will be fixed to create a cooking area for making meals for these children.
The other use for the church will be for much needed counselling in the community. Thembisa would also like to start an upliftment programme to teach the women in the community to sew. I have no doubt more ideas will be put into practice.
Elizabeth's entire family have been involved with obtaining the use of the land for free from the local council. They started with a tent but managed, with the help of the community, to buy Zinc sheets to build the structure. Sadly a bad storm tore the house down, but nothing will stop the dream and it was re-built.
Thembisa currently holds church services 3-4 times a week here. It is also used for local community meetings.
