Mudita School

Support a school overcoming caste-based discrimination in India.

This is my friend Bharat Wankhade...

His dream is to create a school that will provide education to the poorest children from the Dalit (so called “untouchables”) and Tribal communities. Hundreds of thousands of these children are victims of horrendous caste-based discrimination and stigma which undermines their access to education. Many are forced to drop out of school due to inhumane treatment, perpetuating a cycle of of social exclusion, poor education, and poverty.

Bharat has created a very special school in Amravati, India called Mudita School.
"Mudita" means pure joy resulting from delighting in the well-being of others.

Our Vision:
We envision an India where children lead a dignified life and achieve their full potential and no child is deprived of education because of social stigma and poverty.

Our Mission:
Mudita School’s mission is to bring positive change in India by focusing on quality education in the belief that education is a powerful catalyst for social transformation. In keeping with this mission we provide an enthusiastic learning environment that encourages children to bring out the best in themselves and enables their all-round development through the joy of learning, enduring values, creativity and critical thinking.

Our Motto:
Dare to Dream...Learn to Act.

Our Values:
Integrity, Compassion, Courage, Self-Discipline, Respect.

Our Objectives:
- To provide education to underprivileged and impoverished children from rural India.
- To provide a safe, secure and conducive environment in which each child can dare to dream.
- To offer educational programmes that support children to learn excel in academic, physical, social, emotional, moral development and enjoy learning, achieve excellence and become a lifelong learner.
- To inculcate in children, the values of integrity, compassion, courage, self-disciple and respect towards others and the environment.
- To encourage children to develop the qualities of self-discipline, positive self-image, teamwork, spirit of adventure and leadership.

What we've achieved so far:
We have two highly qualified and dedicated teachers who are willing to work voluntarily. We have raised over €1,200 – not an easy task in India where this is a lot of money – and this will cover school rent for one year and classroom furniture.

How can you help?
To cover tuition for ten children for one year, as well as school bags and clothing, we need to raise €2,000 (a modest amount by European standards, but genuinely very hard to raise from within the Dalit and Tribal communities in India due to systemic poverty.) Please give what you can - a donation of €50 will fund one child for around four months.

 Breakdown of the funds required:
1) Tuition for 10 children for one year: €1,350
2) Books, stationery, school bags: €150
3) School clothing: €200
4) Tables and 6 chairs for teachers & visitors: €150
5) Website: €150

I got to know Bharat as we are both members of the Triratna Buddhist Community, and we lived together for 6 weeks in London raising money for a charity (www.karuna.org ) which works with the Dalit community in India & Nepal. Bharat is from this community, and received his secondary school education from a Karuna school.

That we are in a position to reach out the hand of empathy, solidarity, and active compassion to some of the most discriminated against children on the planet is a blessing. Please join with us in this project.
