Update as of January, 2020: Since the creation of this campaign in 2018, we've now held two pre-printing orders of our first book, The Dough-Bowl-Biscuit Maker...a coffee-table-style, full-color, large-format, country-cooking narrative memoir and cookbook, with lots of photographs and reflections in its 144 pages. Now, moving toward a 3rd printing once contributions reach $10,000, if you would like to receive a copy as your gift (WHEN WE REACH THE $10,000 LEVEL), then click "Donate Now" (upper right) and then choose the $42 donation block (the reward for that block is a copy of the biscuit book). After you contribute, send us an email to the address below and include the name you donated under, as well as your full U.S. Postal Service mailing address AND your email address. Their generation is leaving us. Their simple farmsteads are disappearing, as "progress" and growth arrives. When our rural parents pass, family farms are split or sold, dividing estates in shares. Following my mother's death in June, we were at that juncture...deciding whether to keep a small part of my parents' homestead as my share or allow it to be sold...possibly developed one day.
Maybe we can help create a new model...for our small farmstead and others': a model where old barns remain, pastures stay green and garden spots bring forth several "messes" of squash & green beans, year after year...a model which makes small homestead farms profitable and sustainable as event venues for city folks, nearby...preventing those homesteads from becoming mini subdivisions, instead.
We believe that Mtn. Roots Revival is supposed to carry on:
~ #1) Building a wedding & old-ways gathering barn – where barn event guests can experience a typical, working, sustenance farmstead, too...where they'll kick off their shoes and learn the basic double toe to the rhythm of bluegrass...where they'll join in and feel the spirit of the old gospel hymns...where their plates will be filled with fresh-cut, skillet-creamed corn and fried okra, homemade candied yams and hand-breaded fried chicken...with fried pies or scratch-made banana pudding, too. :)
If we build the big ol' gathering barn and get just a few farm animals back on this homestead, again, we hope y'all will visit with us one day...in person if you can or online through photos or films, if not. :) Even if you're far, far away, we'll try to make you feel like you're right here in the barn for the toe tapping...for the old hymns we hope will drift gently through the pasture...for the chicken coop...the pet sow and so much more! :)

~ $315 Reward Level: A Hand-Carved Dough Bowl. This octagonal dough bowl was modeled after the bowl my grandfather carved for my mother...the one she used each day for years. It's a bit larger...around 14" in diameter at upper, outer rim & about 4" in external height (base to upper rim). Mama thought her bowl was too small (she usually made two batches when serving lots of folks); so, she thought this bowl should be bigger for y'all. If you choose this reward level, expect 3 to 4 months or so from the time of your contribution, varying with the availiability of wood; drying time and the number of folks ahead of you. Each bowl is carved by hand from a log...a lengthy process. Maple wood. Striped (marked) maple, as we typically use, might take longer to find.
