Holocaust Study Abroad

Donation protected
I began teaching middle school 6 years ago. One of the units we cover is the Holocaust. This is such an important time period in history, but I didn’t feel that I had enough background knowledge to cover it the best I could for my students. My coworker, Kate Gholston, introduced me to The Birmingham Holocaust Education Center (BHEC). I have attended numerous conferences and workshops hosted by the BHEC and the Jewish Foundation for the Righteous (JFR). The JFR is an organization in New York that provides financial support to Christians who rescued Jews during the Holocaust. They also preserve the rescuers’ legacy through a national education program. My studies have expanded my knowledge base. I’ve also incorporated numerous lessons and activities within my WWII unit.

I would love to attend the JFR European Study program because it is important for me to continue my professional development. Traveling to Germany and the Netherlands will help me understand the topics we’ve covered. I will be able to witness where these events took place, talk with local people who can share their stories and learn from the educators and speakers that will be with us. I want to be immersed in the culture to understand and appreciate local customs, traditions and history. This will help me guide my students through this difficult time in history.

The cost of the trip is over $3500. Being a teacher, that is not in my budget. I would greatly appreciate any support you could give. Every bit helps!
