Mississippi-DC-NY Field Trip

When I was younger I lacked an appreciation for reading, writing, and my education as a whole. This passion did not develop until High School when I encountered the type of teacher you encounter in movies—one who pushed me beyond the ceiling I had built for myself. Only then did I truly engage in the material I encountered. Seeing how the information I learned applied to the world around me gave me a newfound appreciation for reading and, more generally, my education.

This is why I became a teacher: I want all students to attain the same academic awakening that I found through freedom in the classroom and ownership over their work. Every day, I reflect upon how lucky I was to have had a community that pushed me to work hard in school, despite my disinterest. Moreover, I was privileged enough to have resources in elementary, middle, and high school that facilitated my learning.

Some of my students will have a supportive community, some will not. Either way, they all deserve the same opportunities that their peers around the country have, with teachers who will be there for them as mentors and engaged community members.

An invaluable resource is travel. Traveling gives students exposure to people and places different from their own while opening their eyes to a wide array of culture and beliefs. These factors allow students to see beyond their neighborhood and develop a life-long connection to the outside world.  Numerous students have discussed their current home life with me – not being allowed to leave their houses after school and having little to do in their towns. This trip would give them the opportunity to see two cities that exist at the nexus of American politics and culture.

My students deserve to experience the ubiquitous 5th-grade field trip to the monuments and a cultural immersion that will change their lives. Every dollar counts. We hope you donate.
