My name is Mark Hickey and I am fundraising for Meningitis Research Foundation Ireland.

Meningitis is an inflammation (swelling) of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord. A bacterial or viral infection of the fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord usually causes the swelling. However, injuries, cancer and other types of infections also can cause meningitis.
This disease is affecting 1.2 million people throughout the world annually, About 70 percent of all Bacterial Meningitis occurs in children aged 5 and under.
The highest incidence of disease found in the 'meningitis belt' of sub-Saharan Africa. In this region, major epidemics occur every 5 to 12 years with attack rates reaching 1,000 cases per 100,000 population.
In aid of Meningitis I will be completing an 8 day trek across the Atlas Mountain Range in Morocco -Africa - to raise money and awareness for MRF who are hoping eradicate this disease by 2030.
