All it takes is one moment. One tiny moment that can change life as you knew it. This was the case for Amanda on Monday, September 24. One minute she remembers being at a stop sign, not a car in sight. The next thing she remembers is a paramedic telling her that Jaws for Life is going to be used to extract her from the car and get her to the nearest hospital.
It turned out that coming in the other direction was a man in a large van pulling a trailer who did not see this same stop sign. He slammed head on in to the driver side of Amanda’s SUV, hitting her at such force that it pinned her between her crushed door and her center counsel while sending her vehicle 40 yards from the intersection in to a field of trees. Amanda was rushed to the nearest hospital and then transferred that same day to a larger trauma center for further management. She woke up to find numerous lacerations, burns, and large bruises covering her body. Tiny fragments of glass still stuck in areas of her skin and in her hair. Her pelvis was majorly fractured in 5 different areas with multiple other small fractures and bone chips throughout the pelvic region. As the concussion from the accident slowly heals, flashbacks of moments from the accident are haunting her.
Amanda was told she is very lucky to be alive. The doctors are hoping surgery is not necessary, however, it is still very possible as they watch her extremely closely over the next several weeks. The current treatment plan is intense physical therapy and time. She can barley move without help and moving in general is excruciatingly painful. Trying to move even an inch, let alone get up for PT or to use the walker and go to the bathroom is agonizing. Amanda will be undergoing intense physical therapy and repeat scans and tests as she follows up with multiple different doctors. One thing is very clear. It is going to be an incredibly long road ahead for her and her family.
Amanda is married with three young girls and works part time to help support their family. Unfortunately, because she works part time, she does not have any type of disability benefits. It is anticipated that it will be at least 6 months before she is able to return to work. Leaving them not only with the stress of every day bills and necessities, but with the burden of large amounts of medical bills amongst other things that are going to arise as well from this terrible accident. Due to her injuries, Amanda cannot move by herself and is unable to be left alone, requiring constant care and help.
