Movement for Dexter

Donation protected
On May 24, 2011 our amazing little boy Dexter was born premature(29weeks gestation).  At age 2, he was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and about a year later autism. After the diagnosis, we were faced with grief and uncertainty.  Our lives were about to go into unknown more than we ever expected

In the last 6 years, Dexter has worked so hard to develop his gross motor skills.  but we have hit a wall with traditional therapy and his development has plateaued.

We are having great results with a method based on neuroplasticity that has helped Dexter find greater ease and increased range of motion in his body. This method is called Neuromovement(R) Anat Baniel Method(R) and is helping Dexter improve the organization in his brain. He is bearing weight on his feet! He is starting to walk on his knees! He is confident moving and his balance has improved! Amazing.

Since last November, Dexter has continued to improve in all areas of his life. He is now reading ahead of his peers. His report card is above average. He no longer needs behavioural therapy for his social skills. He is an amazing brother and friend. The only thing holding him back are his gross motor challenges.

Last week Dexter asked me, "Mom, when will I walk like an adult?"
Dexter is receiving monthly intensives(2 lessons per day for 4-5days) of Neuromovement lessons!  This is well beyond our budget so I have decided to train in this method so I can support Dexter myself.  It is also my hope to support our community and other children with special needs.

Without further intervention, his doctors at Vancouver Childrens Hospital are expecting Dexter to decline in his overall strength.  There is no intervention available in Canada that could help sustain his progress.  However, there is a non-invasive fascia release procedure called Selective Percutaneous Myofascial Lengthening (SPML) available, but only in the US.  This surgery will give Dexter additional ease and independence, and the training will support continued gains.

We are fundraising to help us pay for SPML surgery and Neuromovement training.

 Expenses:
a) Neuromovement training (14 months)
- training $28,000US
- Childrens mastery training $11,200US
- accommodation and travel $7,200

b) SPML surgery
- travel to the US $1,600
- cost of surgery $12,000US
- accommodations $3,000US
- rehabilitation $5,000US

Total costs = Aprox $68,000

Please help us give Dexter the gift of movement.  The possibilities are exciting!

Thank you friends!

Despite the challenges of the situation, my son is my angel and he has changed my view of the world and how I deal with life.

Love,
Jenny, Iain, Kayla, Dexter
