Morning Glory Cookbook Fundraiser!

Morning Glory Bakery holds so many memories and important experiences for so many people. It may have been a first job, it may have been your wedding cake. For me it was a lot of things over twelve years, and in the final two it was a place where (while I was working the craziest hours of my life) my future husband and I met and fell in love. He wrote about why he believes in this cookbook adventure and I’ll share it here with you.

(If you’re around, there will be a delicious fundraiser dinner and silent auction on January 18th at the Neighborhood House - just a heads up, we’re selling tickets in advance! Contact-[email redacted])

“Morning Glory Bakery has been a part of the island for many many years before my time here on MDI, and countless people can tell their most fond Morning Glory memory. I feel like I have endless. Without the bakery, I would have never engaged in such fulfilling friendships, ate such delicious food, obtained pretty quality (humble brag) baking skills, and most importantly, I would have never met Maria. My bakery dream/career started only a few years ago, when I surprise took over the bakery for five months, after Maria was forced to bedrest due to a ruptured disc and a surgery that followed. But Maria’s bakery dream began decades before that - since she was twelve years old, Maria fantasized about running her own cafe, serving homemade food full of love, and planning out dishes and menus.

She lived out that dream, albeit, for a less than ideal amount of time. Our lease was not renewed, the building was quickly sold for a price that was out of our reach, and we were left with limited options on where to go next. As we began to consider all the factors, it made heartbreaking sense to let the bakery go. And with that, Maria was letting her dream go. A year has gone by, and it still hurts, there is so much to miss about the bakery - most importantly, the community that made it. The summer people. The outrageous amount of blueberry muffins. The heartfelt conversations between coworkers in the back by the aprons. The sticky buns. The Ralphy, Rosa Lisa, Number 9, the Kase. Spicy cilantro cream cheese. The winter people. The internet that was never reliable. Jay, the best delivery guy we ever had (I may have told him that I Ioved him). The friends who would visit through the back door, and the tourists who would take pictures through the screen. The cheddar bagels. The everything bagels. All of the bagels. The days we stayed open when the power was out just to serve our regulars coffee. The Buche de Noel. The Swedish Cardamom Buns. The pies. The chai. Just to name a few things…

This is the next part of the dream, or rather, a part of keeping her dream alive. A tangible iteration of her dream and love of creating delicious food, for you to hold, remember, and celebrate. This fundraiser will assist in the time and energy it takes to make a Morning Glory Bakery cookbook. Hopefully it will take you back to walking down a snow-covered Rodick street and the sound of mixers whirring, while you talk with a good friend over a warm cup of coffee. Or maybe, this cookbook will solve your unfulfilled craving for veggie cream cheese and the satisfaction of never having to wait in another summer line when you have to get to work in the morning. Or, you’re like me, and you just NEED the vegan espresso shortbread cookie recipe. Whatever your reason, this cookbook will cover all things savory, sweet, and baked. It’s meant to warm you up the same way the bakery did in the wintertime, and provide you with all the insider knowledge you’ve always wondered about.

Your contribution will make this dream a reality. With the sooner-than-anticipated sale of the bakery, Maria was left with a significant debt to the landlord, and this factor alone has made the endeavor of taking time to write a cookbook seem daunting. So, with all that in mind, Maria’s turning to you, the community. The same community that was there when we had to empty the building. The same community that came back every summer for that special treat. The same community that we met because of flags flown from our doors, or the beautiful flowers that grew around the building. To ask for help in this next step, the next big dream, in hopes that you are both equally excited and hungry for more Morning Glory.

Falling in love with Maria also included falling in love with both the act of baking and Morning Glory Bakery.”
