Monique's Diabetic Alert Dog Successor

Hi and Happy New Year. As many of you know I was paired with a Diabetic Alert Dog back in August of 2016. For five years Waimea protected me and gave me a sense of independence I truly needed. Unfortunately, Waimea passed from an inoperable tumor in April of 2021. I have struggled with the idea of being paired with another service dog ever since. Early Alert Canines refers to a second service dog for clients as a Successor. These dogs are paired with individuals who have lost their previous service animal or if said dog retires.

Those who met Waimea and know of our story know that she was truly a guardian angel. Not only did she help with my physical health she also provided so much support mentally. Our bond was like no other and I truly feel like I lost my best friend. There is absolutely NO replacing her. She was truly one in a million. With that being said, I have seen a change in my medical care and have even spoken with my endocrinologist regarding these changes. It is no secret that Waimea truly changed my life. I work hard everyday to remain in control of my Type 1 Diabetes. I am lucky to have access to an insulin pump, continuous glucose monitor, and an amazing care team. However, the benefits of a service animal are indescribable and the differences can truly be seen.

I am raising money to help with the training and initial fees that come with a service animal. Early Alert Canines is such an amazing company and only charge a fraction of what these beautiful dogs are worth. My main concern is making sure the next dog I am paired with has everything he/she may need. I still have everything that was used for Waimea but a new dog deserves their own things as well. So in addition to monetary donations I am also accepting dog essentials (toys, gear, etc). PO Box information will be shared shortly.

Again, this has truly been a tough decision but also feels like the right decision for myself and my health. If all you can do is like and share this fundraiser just know you have helped me tremendously. Waimea will always be a huge part of me and my life. I can't wait to meet her successor and start a new bond.
