Moira Burns (Mary Hutchison), beloved mother, granny, great-granny, sister and aunt, passed away on December 27 2020. She did not want flowers at her funeral but we are mindful that lots of people wanted to do something to commemorate her, not so much for her, but for the family she leaves behind.
As such, we have created the The Moira Burns Memorial Scholarship with the purpose of providing financial assistance to a student who may be at risk of not continuing their education due to family circumstances. Moira was an enthusiastic fund-raiser, and was passionate about education, especially in supporting the education of disadvantaged children. She believed that all children deserved access to higher education and to reach their full potential, irrespective of their financial situation.
Moira herself had to give up her own education early due to family circumstances, but never lost her lust for reading and learning. It's a love she passed on through the generations, to her children and grandchildren, that has lasted a lifetime. Although life was often tough for Moira, especially financially, she thought nothing of going without to ensure we all had the best possible chances when it came to our education. It was hard to ignore the sacrifices she made for us, and despite us not always having everything we physically needed, we always had her unwavering support, love and determination for us to do the best we could.
Due to our own experiences we are aware that many, many other young people will be missing out on the education they need and deserve, due to their family circumstances. The Moira Burns Memorial Scholarships ambition is to support these young people, so they can achieve their full potential.
The plan is to award a 6th form student, as nominated by their tutors, a fixed sum each term for them to purchase the resources they need to continue their studies. This is in conjunction with Springwood High School, Kings Lynn, currently although the dream is to expand this to other schools in the future.
We appreciate this is a difficult time for everyone, but any amount you can spare will make a huge difference to a young persons future, as well as being gratefully received by us, her family.
