Duane Harrison. Medical Emergency
April 9th at 11: 40 am, 2017, my beloved husband of 14 years suffered a Pulmonary Ischemic stroke, right side affected.. We had been sitting holding hands, laughing and watching a movie. He gave no indicators. He stopped talking. And for those of you that know my husband,that to me was a cause for alarm. I called 911, he was taken by ambulance to be medivaced to Mary Washington Hospital. Because his stroke was caught in the golden hours he was given the drug tPA. Four days later he walked out of the hospital.
May 2nd at 11:40 am 2017, 23 days later he suffered another smaller series of Ischemic strokes adjacent to the first one. Again I called 911, they arrived quickly however the damage was done. He was taken by ambulance to Mary Washington Hospital where he stayed another 4 days.
This time he did not walk out. His right side (dominant side) is quite impaired. He is unable to walk, bathe, dress or groom himself unless assisted. He can not drive. The stroke affected his cognitive abilities, Thought to speech is very slow, searches to find the right words, short term memory strongly affected, speech is softer and much more difficult. Depression has significantly increased. He is impaired emotionally often to tears.
As we do not have any insurance we were unable to send him to inpatient stroke recovery rehab on either occasion. The cost alone for just one of his medications that he will have to take to prevent future blood clots is $365.00 The rest of his many medications for high blood pressure, arthritis, depression are approximately $200.00 per month.
In addition he is unable to see doctors necessary to his condition due to lack of insurance and funds.
We are asking for financial help with hospital bills, ambulance, Medivac, medications, stroke rehab, doctor appointments and incontinence products.
Duane E. Harrison is a former P.E. Teacher at Culpeper Highschool Culpeper, VA., former FEDEX Senior Manager, former P.E. and Drivers ED teacher at King George High School, King George VA.. He was also a standout athlete during his High school years and has been inducted in to the schools Hall of Fame.
He is also a former stand out All American athlete at his college, Bridgwater College, VA. He led the college to its first ever ODAC Championship, still holds records there and has been inducted in to their Hall of Fame.
