From Tent to Home: Omar & Mitzi

Donation protected
Lately, most stories in Oakland are about good people moving out, being displaced or facing homelessness for years.

I am so pleased to tell you about our beloved friends Omar and Mitzi, who after years of living in a tent at an East Oakland encampment, are moving into their own apartment on March 1, 2018! Omar and Mitzi have an incredible love story of endurance and hope-- it is the love they share and the support they have been able to give each other while living under conditions we couldn’t begin to imagine, that continues to inspire us.

Moving into their own place will be an incredible relief for this couple. They have had to overcome so many challenges in addition to being unhoused: Omar has almost died from seizures; and Mitzi is epileptic, diabetic, anemic, has been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), congestive heart failure, and sleep apnea. Mitzi has been without one of her necessary medical machines for 3 years. She has had six strokes and blood clots in her lungs.

Getting into their own place will allow them to get all of Mitzi’s medical supplies, out of the cruel elements that affect her physical condition every day, and be able to truly focus on her health and recovery. This new place will allow Omar and Mitzi to have a safe space to see their children and grandchild. Mitzi will now be able to live stress-free and not be in constant fear of the predators that plague the city’s encampments.

As The East Oakland Collective, Oakland residents and the larger community, we are coming together to support Omar and Mitzi’s move to self-determination through a fundraising effort. 100% of what we raise will go directly to Omar and Mitzi and their new home. Target date to furnish their new place is by March 15, 2018. Please support our friends and neighbors by contributing to this campaign AND helping us spread the word!

Donations will go towards:

New furniture (bedroom, living room, kitchen)
New kitchen supplies
New bed and bedding
New inflatable beds for children and grandchild
