Colleen's Mission Trip to Japan

STORY TIME

After moving down to Florida to be closer to family, I’ve been working a job as a barista/cashier at Mitchell’s Coffee House. All the while, the call to go back to Japan has not gone away.

My first time was for one month in 2013 (pictured above) and again for two months in 2014. Last year became more flexible, so I began to look for an opportunity. As it turns out, there was an opening for a cafe worker at a coffee house in Tokyo this summer! Reading that listing was like seeing a flashing neon sign.

I applied for the position and am excited to share that I’ve been given the green light to go! What’s neat is the organization (TEAM) is the same one I went through to go to Japan in 2014. You can read all about that trip at (jotsfromjapan.tumblr.com). Simply type in the password "tittle" to access!

The people of Japan have been on my heart since high school. As a teenager, I took piano lessons at a music school. At this school, I was drawn to and inspired by many of the asian students' dedicated work ethics. While learning art, I was exposed to the beautiful and often strange Japanese animated films by Hayao Miyazaki. Both these experiences prompted me to research Japanese culture further. I began teaching myself to write their alphabet and checked out library books on Japanese history and customs. As a Christian, my heart became more and more burdened for the people as I began to understand their culture.

BACKGROUND

Japan is a land of spiritual darkness. Their suicide rate is one of the highest in the world with more suicides each year (over 30,000) than the total number of lives lost in the earthquake and tsunami of 2011 (around 16,000). Whether worshiping in the cultural tradition of Shintoism where nature, numerous gods, and ancestors are worshiped, or adhering to the empty philosophies of Buddhism, the Japanese are not finding answers of hope. Turning to materialism and humanism hasn’t provided answers either. It's often easy to forget that such a technologically advanced society can be steeped in spiritual darkness, yet that is the case for the vast majority of Japanese (99.57%).

I will be working behind-the-scenes to build bridges to the gospel in an unreached area of downtown Tokyo. Some of my duties will include preparing food, making orders, and maintaining a multi-functional cafe while long-term missionaries connect with visitors. While there, I will also be able to participate in creative opportunities as they host music nights and English classes.

There is always a need for short-term workers in Japan. By taking care of often time-consuming and tedious tasks, my services will help the full-time missionaries engage more fully in growing relationships with the Japanese.

For this mission I do need your support! First and foremost, I need prayer that I be attentive to God’s will during my time of preparation and time in Japan. On the financial end of things, there is also an opportunity for you to invest in what God is doing!
