Hola, mi nombre es Jesús Escalona Oropeza. Soy Venezolano, profesor jubilado de Matemáticas y sufro de diabetes aguda e hipertensión. Necesito hacerme hemodiálisis 3 veces por semana por las condiciones de mis riñones, sin embargo, esto no me ha impedido seguir enseñando a muchos jóvenes que actualmente están estudiando mientras enfrentan muchas tribulaciones en nuestro país.
El año pasado me diagnosticaron cataratas en ambos ojos, lo que requiere una cirugía urgente, de lo contrario perderé la capacidad de ver. Para realizar esta cirugía, tuve que someterme a un procedimiento médico largo y costoso para tratar la retinopatía diabética que ahora está bajo control y me hace apto para mi cirugía de cataratas. Conociendo la situación económica de todos los venezolanos, profesionales o no, no tengo los recursos para cubrir dicha cirugía y por eso necesito la ayuda de todas aquellas personas e instituciones que puedan colaborar con generosidad y solidaridad. Por la presente hago un llamado de ayuda a todos aquellos estudiantes, ahora profesionales exitosos, y que de alguna manera he tocado sus vidas en los últimos 45 años de mi carrera de profesor de matemáticas, a los miembros de mi familia que con mucho sacrificio han podido salir del país y progresar exitosamente, y a todos mis compañeros y amigos que están en mejores condiciones económicas que yo.
Son momentos de incertidumbre, angustia y urgencia para todos, pero cualquier aportación que puedas dar es muy valiosa e importante para mí. Sin mi vista, estaré devastado y mi corazón se romperá por no poder ayudar a jóvenes matemáticos.
Les pido sus oraciones para hacer frente a esta enfermedad y situación. Amo enseñar matemáticas y quiero seguir aportando a nuestra juventud.

Hello, my name is Jesus Escalona Oropeza. I am from Venezuela, a retired Mathematics professor suffering from diabetes and hypertension. I need to receive hemodialysis 3 times per week due to an acute kidneys’ failure, however this has not prevented me from continuing to practice my profession, helping many young people who are currently studying while dealing with many tribulations in our country.
Last year, I was diagnosed with cataracts in both eyes, which requires urgent surgery, otherwise I will lose my ability to see. To perform this surgery, I had to undergo a long and expensive medical procedure to treat diabetic retinopathy which is now in control and makes me suitable for my cataract surgery. Knowing the economic situation of all Venezuelans, professional or not, I don't have the resources to cover said surgery and that is why I require the help of all those people and institutions that can collaborate generously and in solidarity. I hereby make a call to all those students who in any way I have touched their lives over the last 45 years of my teaching career, to my family members who with much sacrifice have been able to leave the country and progress successfully, and to all my colleagues and friends who are in better economic conditions than me
These are moments of uncertainty, anguish and urgency for everyone, but any contribution you can give is very valuable and important to me. Without my sight, I will be devastated and my heart will break for not being able to help young mathematicians.
I ask for your prayers in coping with this illness. I love teaching mathematics and I want as many people as possible to have the experience with math that I’ve had.
