On April 17th, an unthinkable tragedy happened to my 50-year-old brother, Rafal. While he was doing yardwork, a large branch fell unexpectedly and struck him on the head causing a severe traumatic brain injury. The force of the branch shattered the base of Rafal’s skull, fractured vertebrae in his neck, and nearly detached his head from his spine. The injuries partially blocked arteries that provide blood to his brain, leading to subsequent strokes in his brainstem and the cerebellum.
Thanks to his daughter’s immediate response, Rafal made it to the hospital in time to undergo life-saving brain surgery. But, our once vibrant and athletic Rafal will never be the same and even in best case scenario he will struggle for the rest of his life with basic life functions. Although he is just beginning to breathe on his own, he is still on a ventilator and in a coma. The neurosurgeon who operated on Rafal shared that he had never seen injuries so severe in his 30 years of practice.
One of Rafal’s doctors has described the recovery ahead of him as a marathon being run at glacial speed, and we’re just past the starting line. Assuming Rafal begins to show some improvement, he will need to endure multiple complex, life-threatening surgeries, as well as a very long rehabilitation. His prognosis at this time is uncertain, though each possible outcome is difficult for everyone to comprehend.
We are asking for support for Rafal’s wife, Anna, and children, Konrad and Victoria, as they face this financial burden. Rafal will never return to work again and may require 24/7 care in addition to the mounting medical expenses. Please give from your heart whatever you are able, so that the family can focus on supporting Rafal through this difficult time. And above all, please send your prayers and positive energy for his successful recovery. Thank you!!!
