Miguel & Martha Gomez Flood Relief

Donation protected
Miguel & Martha Gomez have been respected members of the Southcrest Community for over 60 years. Miguel served two terms in the US Marines, was a community activist & served as a chairman on the board committee for the Southcrest Community Center. Mr & Mrs. Gomez have owned their home on Beta St for 60 years, where they raised their children and grandchildren. Decades of memories & hard work put into their home, only to watch it destroyed within minutes.

on Monday Jan 22, 2024, San Diego was hit with an extreme amount of rain. But, due to the city negligence, this caused a city wide flood. The canal & storm drains that runs parallel to Beta St , which happens to be directly behind the Gomez home, is filled with a ridiculous amount of debri, trash and trees/plants. Because of this, it caused the canal and storm drains to overflow and flood causing the sewage to back up and become the main source of the flooding. The Gomez house filled with water within minutes. The water rushed in so fast that Miguel & Martha were unable to escape their home. The house filled a good 5 feet , Miguel was able to tread water while holding his wife Martha above his head, saving her life. Once they were rescued they were admitted into the hospital were they both suffered hypothermia, water in their lungs and infection from the bacteria (sewage) in the water. Martha is now on oxygen due to this.

Mr & Mrs. Gomez have suffered a complete loss. Their 4 bedroom home, 2 cars and an entire home full of belongings and memories, everything gone and not salvageable. Unfortunately they did not have flood insurance and on a fixed income so, rebuilding will be very difficult for this 80 year old couple. They will need to rebuild their home from the ground up as it was deemed a complete loss. As well as all their belongings & furniture.

We are asking the community, friends, family & neighbors to come to come together during this difficult time and help Miguel & Martha rebuild their home.
