Migrant Advocacy Scholarship

Donation protected
Migrant Advocacy Project is an organization whose mission is to help facilitate the successful transition of displaced migrants with the overall goal of fostering self-sufficiency and personal growth. We are partnering with Oakland International High School to implement a mentorship program and create a scholarship opportunity for local immigrant youth in Oakland, CA who are at risk for assimilating into gang culture.

This project is near and dear to my heart because I am the daughter of two refugees from Afghanistan who came to America during the Soviet invasion. My stepfather was deported when I was 13 years old and I started working at the age of 15 to help support my mother and three siblings. I attended SFSU and will never forget the semester that I used all of my financial aid to move my family out of the home where we lived in unsanitary conditions (e.g. mold, insect invasion) which left me with no money to buy my books or even drive to class most days. My family received an eviction notice and became homeless during my third semester at SFSU so I dropped out of school to work a retail job at Nordstrom with the hope that I could one day continue my education. I am now in the process of completing my final year as an undergrad at University of California, Berkeley and will have a B.S. in Molecular and Cell Biology, Neurobiology. Without the financial  assistance I received in the form of outside scholarships I would not have been able to continue my education given that my family has been homeless a total of three times during my undergraduate career. Please join me in helping create equal access to education for students who are faced with similar circumstances by making a $5.00 donation to our scholarship fund or by liking and retweeting this campaign on Twitter.  Our scholarships will be awarded based on financial need.

Here's a video that has information about the demographics of the student population at Oakland International High School and how they rely on their community partners to help make a difference in the lives of their students:
