Mighty Mikey's Life Changing Therapy

Donation protected

Mighty Mikey is an incredibly happy 18 month old boy who brings so much joy to everyone he meets. Mikey is known for his charming smile and infectious giggles…
I first met Emma about 10 years ago through a mutual friend, but it wasnt untill after I photographed their wedding in New Zealand back in 2015 that we became close friends. There isn't a day that goes by that Emma and Andrew stop giving Mikey 110% of their time, attention and devotion. With hours of therapy, physio and endless appointments, they constantly give him all they can and never give up. Emma is always making Mikey new toys and devices to teach him new activities and her courage and love always has me in awe. If there was ever a couple/family who deserve all the best life has to offer it's these 2, and I beleive Mikey is just that. He is the happiest baby I have ever come across and his laughter and smile is so infectious.

Mikey entered the world just over 4 weeks early on January 29th 2016, he was blue, he wasn’t breathing and doctors thought it was too late. The amazing doctors helped Mikey’s little lungs take a breath and he was rushed to NICU where he stayed for 5 weeks. Mikey suffered a lack of oxygen during his final hours in the womb, the cause is still unknown. An MRI at 4 days old revealed that this lack of oxygen had caused Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE), severe brain damage. This damage has resulted in a main diagnosis of spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy and further diagnosis of epilepsy, hearing loss, microcephaly and global developmental delay.

Mikey’s main diagnosis of cerebral palsy means he has to work extremely hard to do the things we take for granted every day like holding a spoon, sitting independently and standing. Right from the early days in NICU Mikey’s parents, Emma and Andy started therapy. They are determined to give Mikey the best chance at a normal independent life.

Emma and Andy devote themselves to creating opportunities for Mikey to reach milestones. Andy works away a lot to save for intensive therapy while Emma is constantly finding fun ways to incorporate lots of therapy into their busy schedule. Emma and Andy constantly push Mikey to his limits to help train his body to move and to develop his communication. Mikey’s journey is a long one, it takes hours of dedication from everyone especially Mikey, and he does it with a smile on his face.

While Emma and Andy work really hard on therapy with Mikey they are always striving to do more to help him. They have been lucky enough to secure Mikey a spot at NAPA (Neurological and Physical Abilitiation) a block of intensive therapy for 3 hours a day, 5 days a week for 3 weeks which commences on Mikey’s 2nd birthday. This will be NAPA’s first time in Perth so they are very excited to be a part of the program. The 3 week intensive program is based on strengthening and conditioning, decreasing unwanted reflexes, and teaching new improved motor patterns through repetition and correct alignment. You can read more about it here www.napacentre.com.au. This 3 week therapy block is $7,800 USD and it is something we hope to participate in every year in Perth or at the Sydney NAPA Centre.

Myself along with Emma and Andy will greatly appreciate any financial assistance for Mikey to receive the therapy that can help change his life. 100% of money raised will go directly to Mikey’s therapy and specialist equipment.
