Can you please help Mick Roberts' Toronto Maple Leaf Dream come true?

Mick Roberts of Bishop's Falls, Newfoundland has been battling a crippling, degenerative and isolating disease called Duchene Muscular Dystrophy since the age of 3.

Mick lives with a trache and ventilator to breathe.  He needs 24 hours care.  5 years ago Mick almost died.  He had dropped to 40 pounds because he could not take his feed as the air from the Bipap machine was blowing into his stomach and they could not get his feed into him.  He was put on a ventilator and now has a feeding tube.

Since being diagnosed with Duchene MD, Mick's television and computer, a gift from Make A Wish, have lead to his Biggest Passion, The Toronto Maple Leafs and his Dream:  To meet Auston Matthews, the Toronto Maple Leafs team and watch them play live at the Scotiabank Arena, God forbid, before he dies.

My name is Sandra Abdee-Niblock and I reside in Perth, Ontario.  Over the last few years, I have been motivated to help a few inspiring young people that I’d heard had been battling brutal illnesses throughout their short lives, to make contact with their idols; to help motivate them and reward them for their inspiring heroics.  Most recently, I have been moved to help Mick Roberts; an inspiring young man who has been heroically fighting his own health battle for a staggering 25 years and wants to meet the Leafs and watch them play in Toronto this October, 2018.

I informed Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment about Mick and his Dream.  I received notification that the invitation for Mick and his family to attend Scotiabank Arena to watch a Leaf game and meet his team is currently being processed by the “Community Team” at MLSE.

I, along with a few Leafs fans aka “Leafs Nation” found out about Mick when we were moved by a post made last spring by Mick’s mother, Mary to the Leafs Nation Fan Facebook Page.  We formed a Chat Page so that, in consultation with Mick’s mother, we could try to find a way to make Mick’s dream a reality.  This campaign is the result of our discussions.

Mary’s post read:

“Here’s Die-hard fan Mick Roberts”
(Photo of Mick, hooked up to tubes, legs atrophied, laying in a hospital bed in his bedroom chock full of TML memorabilia. The Leafs logo, player’s pictures and Blue and White everywhere his eyes can see.  He’s surrounded by family and friends decked out in TML jerseys).

Mary added: “Mick has earned the handle “Leafs #1 Fan” from family and friends.”

Mary told me:
“Sandra, it hurts so much to know that we can't afford to do the things we want to do for Mick, but this is the biggest dream Mick ever wanted and wanted for a long time. From the time he opens his eyes in the morning, all day long and before he closes his eyes, it’s Leafs, Leafs, Leafs.”

“Every second of Mick’s days are filled with “Leafs”.  “He watches Leaf games, Leaf videos, Leafs Lunch (which he dearly loves along with the host, Andi Petrillo), Tim and Sid and Sportsnet.”   “Mick cries when the Leafs lose and gets so excited when they win.  He gets a great night’s sleep when they win.”

There is not a single doubt, from all who know Mick, that achieving his dream would propel him to keep up his fight against this devastating disease that has taken almost everything from him.  Meeting the Leafs and watching them play live would turn his story from tragic to ultimate triumph; create his own “Stanley Cup” moment and know that his team and people outside of his family care about him.  The benefits would have a profound effect on Mick for his remaining time on earth.

Now, the only hurdle Mick and his family face is obtaining financial assistance to make the trip from Bishop's Falls, Newfoundland to Toronto and back home again.  The Roberts' family have been very hardworking and have prided themselves on caring for their son's special needs without asking for financial assistance.  In this case, they are willing to put aside their pride and accept financial assistance as this will be the only way they can afford to make the trip.  They rely on one income; Mary has been providing care for Mick 24 hours/7 days a week and Mick's father works hard making a modest living for the family and will need to take 10 days leave from work for which he will not be paid.

On behalf of Mick and his family, I am humbly asking you,  to please make a contribution of whatever you can to help make Mick’s dream a reality.   The total amount needed is $6,000.00, based on a 10 day trip of approximately 5350 km from Bishop's Falls, Newfoundland to Toronto and back, which includes the following expenses:

Rental of used Motorhome Transportation/Accommodation,  Funds for Ferry to and from Newfoundland Island (Ferry Fee for Motorhome and Ferry Cabin Fee for 4 people),  Gas for Motorhome, Food,  Toronto Hotel Accommodation and 2 nights at a hotel in GTA and lost income during travel ($1000.00).

Thank you in advance for your kind consideration in “assisting” to make Mick’s “goal” a dream come true.  If you make a donation and provide contact information, I will be sure to keep you informed of the progress of Mick's dream, including photos.

Please, know that when Mick is finally in Toronto watching a Leafs game in the Scotiabank Arena and meeting with Auston Matthews and the Toronto Maple Leafs face to face, grinning from ear to ear, with his family by his side, gratitude will be beating in all their hearts for your generosity.

Sincerely,
Sandra Abdee-Niblock
