Michael's Leukaemia Battle

On the 30th of May 2019 Michael and his family's lives were turned upside down. Only recently had Sonya, a single mother of five, moved the family into their own home and were busy doing some renovations to make their house a home when they received the devastating news that Michael, at only 16, has cancer.

Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) is a type of cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow. ALL is characterised by an overproduction of immature white blood cells, called lymphoblasts or leukaemic blasts. Because the bone marrow is unable to make adequate numbers of red cells, normal white cells and platelets, people with ALL become more susceptible to anaemia, recurrent infections, and to bruising and bleeding easily. The blast cells can then spill out of the bone marrow into the bloodstream and accumulate in various organs including the lymph nodes (glands), spleen, liver and central nervous system (brain and spinal cord).

At the moment Sonya and her Mum, Eve, are travelling between Mackay and Brisbane to look after Michael while he has treatment and to be with Sonya's other children and to allow Sonya to work - even though we know she would rather be with her child every minute while he is dealing with the fight of his life.

Anyone that knows Sonya knows that she would do anything to help you in your time of need, well, it's her time of need so let's do what we can to make this extremely difficult time a little more bearable. Funds will be used for medical expenses, travel expenses and childcare for the youngest two. Any funds left over will be donated on to other charities helping families in this situation. 

So far with the journey it has it has been all ups and downs. Michael had an  anaphylactic reaction to one of the chemos which has put them behind with the original treatment and delayed their stay in Brisbane a lot longer than they had hoped. It has taken massive toll on her family and those assisting.
