Michael Canning: Memorial Expenses

Michael passed away suddenly in the early morning hours of May 14 only hours after a receiving a diagnosis of pneumonia. His death was completely unexpected and the family was unprepared for the expenses. He had no life insurance.
A celebration of Michael's life will be on July 1st from 2 to 5 pm at McDonald Theater, 1010 Willamette Street in Eugene.
Michael's life was dedicated to public radio and especially to music. He was a gentle soul, a welcoming spirit, and thoughtful teacher during his 35 years at KLCC public radio as music host and music director. He mentored and befriended hundreds of radio hosts, volunteers, and musicians of all types.
Michael's other interest also spanned genres. Golf, soft ball, cribbage, photography, fantasy baseball, and especially dahlias. Michael and his wife Cheryle Hawkins showed their prize-winning dahlias all over the state of Oregon and, along the way, collected even more loving friends.
At his core Michael was an old soul. His keen intelligence along with a unique understanding of how people and things related to one another made him a natural teacher. Listening to Michael on the air was more than hearing music. You could understand the relationship between different types of music like jazz and blues. Michael was known as "Big Ears." His approach to music was so inclusive and expansive that it attracted untold listeners who turned to him for guidance and information.
Michael left us too soon. Like most of us, he thought he had plenty of time. Please help us honor Michael to the degree that he deserved. We love and honor you, Michael. Now and forever.
