Michael Deibert needs our help

We have been shocked to learn the news that our dear friend, the author and journalist Michael Deibert, was diagnosed with an advanced and aggressive form of colon cancer.

I could go on about all of Michael's wonderful qualities for days. He's witty and kind and he loves all creatures. I often joke that he's like St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals, feeding stray cats and dogs on the street or rescuing them. He also has the best stories. As a brilliant independent journalist and author, Michael has traveled the world, writing countless articles and books about marginalized people and tough places, including Haiti, Democratic Republic of Congo, Cuba, Guatemala, Brazil, Mexico and Puerto Rico, just to name a few. He has made so many sacrifices to tell stories that no one else tells, and has often risked his own life to shine a light on deep injustices. Now he's the one that needs our help.

While his work is so important, being an independent journalist is not financially stable or lucrative and the U.S. healthcare system is complicated to navigate and unfair. Michael will need our financial support during this time so that he can have a fighting chance at recovery. He needs to be able to focus fully on his treatment and healing.

As you can imagine, the kind of care he will need is going to be very costly, along with the ancillary expenses of transportation, rent, utilities and so on. Anything we can do to ease his mind and pay for some of his expenses could make a tremendous difference in his outcome. I will link to some of his writing and work below so you can get to know him better. He's a special soul, a true humanitarian, and friend to so many around the world. Let's help him out and show him some love so he can pull through.
