Micah Winkle and his family are originally from Georgia, but had been living in China for most of Micah’s life. Micah loved Chinese food, training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and playing with his pet lizards.

When he was 9 years old, Micah’s family returned to the US to finalize the adoption of his little sister. While visiting his family and friends, Micah began to complain of a pain in his leg. It progressively got worse and his parents took him to the doctor. Just two weeks before returning to China, his pediatrician took X-rays and found a tumor.

The Winkles drove to Memphis and the doctors at St. Jude quickly diagnosed Micah with a rare cancer called Ewing Sarcoma on his upper femur near his hip. Just after New Year’s Day of 2015, Micah began more than 20 rounds of chemotherapy and later had a surgery to remove the tumor and his femur and replace it with a titanium rod. He then spent two years doing physical therapy to help him walk as normally as possible.

Now Micah is 12 and his family has settled in Memphis. Due to his cancer being high risk for relapse, the doctors at St. Jude preferred for the Winkles to remain closer by than the other side of the world. Because of the suddenness and seriousness of Micah’s cancer, his parents weren’t able to return to China to deal with their home or business. Some friends were able to save a few personal things but most everything else, including their business, was lost. Therefore, the Winkles are here in Memphis trying to start life over.
