Brayden was taken to Upstate Medical Center for Pediatric cancer/blood disorders in Syracuse, at the age of 6 months, and diagnosed with an extremely rare genetic disorder called the Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome (W.A.S.) W.A.S. is an immunodeficiency disease that is susceptible to infections. It can cause abnormal
bleeding due to low platelet counts. In addition to the platelets being decreased in number, they are also smaller than normal platelets, thus WAS patients can bleed easier, even with no injury. Due to the autoimmune being compromised, there is an increased incidence of many other things entering the picture, which at this stage the doctors are working hard to avoid. Due to his compromised autoimmune system… Brayden is at a gravely increased risk of acquiring any number of life threatening blood disorders (cancers) including lymphoma and/or leukemia, all of which his hematology and oncology doctors and his family are working hard to avoid.
Brayden is presently traveling almost weekly to Upstate Medical Center Cancer Hospital for platelet transfusions and IVIG shots. The only cure is a bone marrow transplant, which will be done in Cincinnati, Ohio after Brayden’s 1st birthday.
