Help Emiliano Get Around Safely

INTRODUCTION
Hi! Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Nadine Widjaja. I'm a 19-year-old student who currently studies at Vancouver Film School.

When I first arrived in Canada about a year ago, I was introduced to Diana Salcedo. She was my guardian/student monitor, but she was more than that. She became the person I could count on as I adapted to college life and being far away from home. She is always helpful, supportive, and considerate. For that, I will forever be thankful.

BACKSTORY
In the Summer of 2020, she introduced me to her family, and that's when I first met five-year-old Emiliano. He has cerebral palsy and can’t hold his head up, sit down, or stand. He is also deaf and blind, he has breathing difficulties and a sleeping disorder. His level of disability is so severe that he is followed up by more than 8 specialists at BC Children's Hospital. He can’t be left without supervision because of his movement disorder and both Diana, and her husband, Cesar have to hold him upright at night because he experiences intense discomfort and pain...

The support that her family receives from the government is very limited and is not enough to cover his basic medical needs, equipment, and therapy. They are also a single-income family as Cesar had to stop working to be Emiliano's full-time caregiver. Insufficient respite and caregiver support leave their family exhausted and struggling financially.

Hearing her story made me realize that while she helps me through my hardships, she is also dealing with her own struggles. And even though they have been very vocal about the lack of support, their voices have not been heard. So for my final project that year, I made a short documentary titled emiliano. in hopes that by raising awareness I could help Diana just a tiny bit.

Here's the link to the documentary:

THE CAUSE
Emiliano is getting bigger, and the family desperately needs a way to transport him safely. They need to drive him to his weekly therapies and appointments. Unfortunately, there is no funding for wheelchair vans whatsoever and it is no longer safe for Emiliano to use a car seat - any car trip requires multiple stops to adjust Emiliano in his car seat.

All proceeds of this campaign will go towards the purchase of a wheelchair accessible van for Emiliano.

Caring for a child with multiple impairments and fragile health conditions that require extensive care and support is extremely difficult. The lack of funding for accessible vehicles puts children and families at great risk of injury and isolation. Please help Emiliano go around safely.

Thank you for your time and attention! Your support is greatly appreciated.
