Mexico Earthquake Survivors

Donation protected
My name is Karen Mazanec. I am originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, but have been residing and working in Mexico City, Mexico for the past 15 years. I am a university English professor at a major, private university in Mexico City.

On September 19, 2017 at 1:15pm, Mexico City and its surrounding states were hit with the 7.1 magnitude earthquake.  38 buildings collapsed in Mexico City alone (the two in the photo were just blocks from my apartment), killing over 300 people - including 5 students at my university.  Hundreds more buildings are currently on the verge of collapse and have been declared "uninhabitable."  Tens of thousands of residents have lost their homes, all of their personal belongings and in many cases - one or more family members.

There has been a tremendous outpouring of support from the local and also international communities in terms of donations of time, money and goods, but sadly, due to government corruption and dishonest organizations, the help is often not making it into the hands of the people who need it most.

Many of my friends in the U.S. have expressed an interest in helping, but I want to be sure that the help offered does indeed reach the people who need it.  As such, I have opened this fund for those who wish to donate something (any amount is helpful since U.S. dollars go quite a long way down here these days), and I will personally make sure it goes directly to help those in need.  I have been volunteering at a local shelter/collection center near my home. I am also preparing to take a load of food stuffs, clothing and other supplies to a rural community about an hour south of Mexico City which suffered heavy damage and, as of yet, has received no help at all.

My plan is to use part the funds for the families in the shelter where I am volunteering and the rest for the rural community in Morelos where we will be bringing a truckload of goods hopefully this weekend or early next week. Rather than just giving people cash, I am trying to identify specific needs (furniture, appliances, clothes, etc.) that each family has and getting the things for them.

I thank you for your time and attention. Please feel free to share this link with anyone you feel might be interested. Hugs and peace to you all!!!
