To those that knew him, Eric was an instant friend. He was always full of laughs and a deep, intrinsic interest in others that one couldn't help but take as sincere.
For family, he leaves behind his only blood relative, his cousin Patsy Glenn. They were close throughout their lives, and he looked up to her as a big sister. She is as shocked and devastated by his loss as the rest of us.
Eric meant to all of us, those that knew him and otherwise, a kind and supportive ear, a hearty laugh (of which there were many) and myriad stories that resonate with us all from the village back in its heyday.
A longtime founder and owner of the venerable leather and fetish shop The Leatherman on Christopher Street, Eric was the defacto supplier for New York's most notorious nightlife during the 70's, 80's, and 90's.
Aside from all that, he was a genuine, caring, benevolent human being with one of the most open minds I've had the pleasure of meeting. I write this in my voice, on behalf of the many who knew and loved him, and I hope my words do some small service to the amazing and storied life he led.
The funds we are hoping to gather on this page will go to getting a round trip ticket for Patsy to New York for Eric's cremation and a small memorial which all are encouraged to attend at Cowgirl Hall of Fame on Hudson and 10th Street. The soonest you can make a donation, obviously, the better as this needs to happen quickly. Please accept all of our heartfelt thanks in WHATEVER contribution you can make in his name.
This is an opportunity to perhaps share some fond memories, stories and ways that he influenced others' lives as I know he influenced mine-- about the whip-smart and funny as Hell man that is, now was, and ever shall remain Eric Watkins. I think I speak on behalf of everyone that he was my friend, he was always ready to meet me for lunch of lend an ear, and I will miss him more than I can describe in words.
