Memorial Fund for Maddie Devries

It saddens us to announce the untimely death of the beloved Maddie DeVries.  Maddie is survived by her father, John DeVries, her mother, Georgiana DeVries and her sister Sophie DeVries.  To know Maddie is to know the incredible joy and  light she carried within her.  She was an amazing sister, daughter, niece and friend.   She was adored by everyone who knew her.  Words cannot express the blessing that she brought into our lives and the lives of those she touched.

Maddie was loving with a gentle spirit, selfless, and kind hearted with a humble nature.  She had such a good soul, loved to have fun, and enjoyed life.  She genuinely cared about the people around her and was always willing to lend a friendly ear.  She was a natural leader who built people up and motivated them, and she always knew that people were most important.

Maddie was a talented writer, artist, and an incredible big sister.  Her passions included being on the jump rope team, playing lacrosse and being an admissions ambassador at UNC.  She also loved surfing, scuba diving, running, hiking, jumproping, biking, the ocean, painting, travel, dancing, photography and much more.

Maddie was a gifted student, talented athlete and was valedictorian of the Class of 2017 at Topsail High School, not to mention prom queen.  She was an All-County and All-Star lacrosse player.   Most recently, Maddie was a junior at UNC Chapel Hill where she was a Covenant Scholar and a School Ambassador.

"Maddie was the kindest, most gentle, warm hearted daughter a mom could ever ask for."  "Her sister, Sophie, has those same qualities. God blessed me with both of them".  "I miss her tremendously, but I know that her spirit will live on in all of her loved ones, and all of the many lives she touched." ~ Georgiana

We are reaching out to the community and loved ones for donations to help offset final expenses and to relieve some of the financial burden during this devastating time.  Please consider helping the DeVries family during their time of need.  Any contribution is greatly appreciated.

More about sweet Maddie:

Maddie was a student at UNC Chapel Hill where she was a Covenant Scholar and a School Ambassador.  She studied at the University's Gillings School of Public Health where she was an undergraduate research assistant in the Department of Epidemiology.  While at UNC, Maddie co-founded the "Jump Ahead" program, where she and other public health students on her jump rope team taught children about jump rope and health education.  It is with this initiative that she had secured a lot of money for education for children in Orange County.

With all these achievements,  John said "she never wore her many accomplishments on her sleeve."  "Maddie was the most humble young lady you'd ever meet and actually was someone who just never took them at face value and never bought into it."

Sophie states that Maddie's favorite quote and would often say it:  "The light in me honors the light in you." "Her spirit will always live on.  Maddie was the best big sister a girl could ever ask for."

When Maddie was very young, the DeVries family lived in Baltimore, Maryland.  It was here that Maddie felt a calling to help people she saw in the streets.  It was at this very young age that Maddie developed a passion for taking care of others.  Maddie made 100 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and put them in meal boxes that included chips and water.  She, with her dad, had gone to some tough areas of Baltimore and delivered these boxes to the homeless and needy.  She left a mark on all.

We'd love for your to share your memories and stories of Maddie with us.  Thank you for your thoughts and prayers.
