Memorial for Stacie Cornwell

Our Mother has been battling quite a few serious health complications for the past year. Stacie is asthmatic and has been on steroids consistently for almost 10 years, this has resulted in the development of osteoporosis. September 2017, she fractured 2 lumbar spine vertebraes and it spiraled out of control from there. Resulting in having fractured her entire lumbar spine and a few of the T vertebraes. She has been in my care since April, which has been an extremely rough road. Caring for a very sick Mom financially and emotionally has been draining, and she has been out of work for a little more than a year. In July she developed Cauda Equina Syndrome, which threatened paralysis and incontinency so emergency correctional surgery was required. My Mother also battled a very threatening blood clotting disorder so an IVC filter was placed before surgery in which complications arose. 2 weeks ago, my mother called me from the hospital to let me know she had been rushed in an ambulance but was ok and getting treatment. Now this is where it gets dangerous, they discharge her and within 48hrs we are rushed back to Christ hospital in an ambulance having to almost be intubated. She receives routine care to treat an asthma attack and wanted to discharge her once again, this is when my mother who is also a Respiratory Therapist, gets medical and advocates for herself!!! She demands a repeat of blood gases, Chest Xray, MRI, etc. Ensuring them that if they discharge her she will die. They finally do what was requested and what do we have?! During her last surgery her phrenic nerve was nicked and her right diaphragm was paralyzed, which was the cause of her nonstop desats and not able to breathe without oxygen. Last week they discharged her regardless of the fact she still COULD NOT BREATHE, we have barely moved in day from the house because she is so scared to move because of how short of breath she becomes. Tuesday, September 18th I finally return to work and do my regular check up on her where she tells me she is not ok and is calling an ambulance. At 21:15 I decide to call Christ hospital because she isn't answering me and as I am on hold Palos Hospital is on the other line. I am notified that Christ was on bypass so she was brought here, when arrived to the ER she was alert and orientated but went down immediately in which they intubated. Minutes after being intubated she Cardiac Arrested, the performed CPR and shocked her with the crash cart multiple times, but she was down for 20 minutes. She went into multisystem organ failure and was diagnosed brain dead at 21:00 on 9/19. I financially care for majority of my family, minus a few siblings and seeing this unexpected loss of our Mother we are financially unprepared. Any donations are well appreciated to help give my Mother a beautifully peaceful farewell. Our family appreciates and thanks you for all of the support given in the loss of our Mother.
