Memorial for Louis Graham at Carleton College

With a heavy heart, we mourn the recent sudden passing of our fellow Carl, Louis Graham. Louis graduated from Carleton with a B.A. in Biology in 2005. As a Carl, he mentored first-year students of color as a Multicultural Peer Leader, served as a teaching assistant for Biology students, danced at numerous Ebony II performances, and made us all smile and laugh along the way. A beloved classmate, friend and member of our community, Louis was an especially kind and gentle soul who profoundly impacted the lives of those around him.
After Carleton, Louis endeavored to bring positive change to this world. He earned a doctorate degree in public health and devoted his life to addressing the social determinants of health among marginalized communities. As an Assistant Professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, he taught courses in Community Health Education, training the next generation of public health leaders. Most recently, he was the Principal Investigator of a research program that sought to develop effective interventions to lower stress and risk of chronic diseases among low-income African-American men using community-based participatory research approaches. Indeed, the indelible influence Louis has made to health, and our society is immense and immeasurable.
Louis will forever live in our hearts and memories. We would like to further honor and celebrate his life by planting a tree at Carleton College . Any contributions to help us commemorate the life and light of our dearest friend would be much appreciated. **The cost for planting a memorial tree with a plaque at Carleton College is $2500--additional funds will be donated toward a charity / scholarship in Louis' honor. **
Finally, we also hope to organize a tree planting event on campus this Spring/Summer to share stories and remember Louis as a group (details to be announced).
