For some time, we (Bob Esposito, husband, and Michael Russo, long-time friend of Rachel Pekarsky) have been talking with family members and friends about placing a bench on the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail as a memorial to Rachel. As many of you know, Rachel loved the Rail Trail, walking or riding her bike on it almost every day.
Permission was granted by the Town of New Paltz for the placement of a memorial bench on the bridge overlooking the Peterskill crossing, just south of the Plains Road crossing, and it has already been installed with the generous assistance of the New Paltz Highway Department. The bench is an eight-foot Asbury-style concrete bench with planks made of recycled plastic. A memorial plaque will be affixed within a few weeks.
We want to invite all of Rachel’s friends to be a part of this memorial by donating whatever they wish to help fund this bench. Any money collected from this invitation over and above the cost of the bench will be donated to the Town of New Paltz for maintenance of this bench and for general needs of the Rail Trail.
Once again, donations can be made in any amount.
