On Tuesday, Nov. 14th Mel was having some concerns with her pregnancy (yes she was pregnant, very early on). She went to Munson Hospital in Traverse City to be checked out. Her labs returned extremely abnormal. With major concern they airlifted her to Spectrum/ Butterworth Hospital. After further testing and a bone marrow biopsy the results came back as APL (Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia). Unfortunately, the very sad news is Mel and Josh lost their baby, they were so thankful for. The very good news is that the prognosis is positive and the APL is treatable. Mel will be at Spectrum/ Butterworth for about a month and will receive chemo in the form of a pill and IV. The treatment is done at the hospital so the doctors can monitor potential side effects which can be immediately treated. Once Mel's lab values remain stable she will be able to complete the rest of her treatments as outpatient in GR and Traverse City. She will also be able to return to work at that time. Mel has a wonderful team of doctors working with her, whom have ensured that she will be able to start a family in the future. All positive vibes and prayers are appreciated.
Many of you have asked what you can do to help. Since Mel is at high risk for infections she is not able to receive fresh flowers or fruit. Mel would like to encourage everyone who is able to donate blood to local blood banks.
