Our 44 year old sister is one of our best friends and the most beautiful person We have ever met. But for many years she has been lost, and we have always tried to find her……
On July 5th, 2021, Melissa was unexpectedly brought in by ambulance to Upstate University Hospital. She was in extreme pain and was unable to move her lower extremities. After being put through an MRI, the doctors let our family know they had discovered an infection on her spine. She had abcesses that started at her C2 vertebrae and ended at her L1 vertebrae (basically her entire spine). In addition to the abscesses, she also became septic, which is a dangerous condition on its own, so doctors rushed her into emergency spinal surgery. Nine hours later, Melissa was placed into recovery where whe was put on a ventilator. Because she was in respiratory failure we had the choice to put her on life support, to say goodbye, or take her off the breathing machine and just pray and hope she could breathe on her own. The choice was made to take her of the vent and the strong and willed person she is Melissa was breathing on her own! Despite what the doctors thought our Melissa was here!! From then on we faced the unknown….
14 weeks later Melissa diagnosis is as followed
Quadriparesis
Spinal cord compression
Acute respiratory failure
Hyponetremia
Hypertension
Sepsis due to infection
Neurogenic Bowel
Neurogenic Bladder
Esophageal Web ……
A complete loss of life as she knew.
As sisters and friends of dear Melissa I’m asking for any type of contribution. Insurance only is limited on supplies and things that Melissa needs. From electric wheelchair, lifts, ramps, wipes, gloves, absolutely anything that you can think of to make life easier in a quadriplegic state….. she needs help!!
We want to thank anyone that has even spent the time to read this in full. Addiction is real and I wish we could have helped Melissa along time ago. . We wish anyone with loved ones in addiction….that you hug them and pray.
NO ONE SHOULD GO THROUGH THIS!!!
This story ends in hope and not death but she does need help!!! Anything will help!!!
Thank you in advance and we can’t wait to share the progress Melissa will have!!!
