Mejorando la educación infantil en Dowa, Malawi

(English bellow) Hola, me llamo Clara y el pasado 19 de enero llegué al Distrito de Dowa, Malawi, para trabajar junto con las escuelas infantiles de las zonas rurales.

Después de visitar las 28 escuelas y conocer mejor sus carencias, necesidades y también sus habilidades y recursos, me he decidido a iniciar esta campaña de recaudación de fondos para trabajar junto con las diferentes Comunidades en mejorar su realidad y hacer un poquito más sencilla la vida para muchas niñas, niños y familias.

Malawi es un país extremadamente pobre ubicado al sureste del continente africano. Más de la mitad de la población vive en situación de pobreza, y entre sus dificultades diarias se encuentran desafíos como el acceso al agua potable, el saneamiento y la atención médica, además del acceso a la educación, especialmente en las zonas rurales como la que me ubico.

Las escuelas infantiles son un recurso muy olvidado en Malawi. En muchas comunidades el edificio consiste en cuatro paredes hechas con ladrillos locales (hechos por la comunidad con tierra de la zona), algunos agujeros a modo de ventana y puerta para que entre luz, unos cuantos troncos para soportar la estructura y ramas secas a modo de techo. Las estaciones en Malawi son tres: época de lluvias (donde nos encontramos ahora), época de frío y época de calor, por lo que hay semanas en las que resulta imposible asistir a la escuela.

Las condiciones de las escuelas no son adecuadas para que niños, maestras y maestros lo encuentren un "lugar seguro" en muchas ocasiones.

Los materiales de aprendizaje y juegos son prácticamente nulos; las comunidades con más recursos facilitan material hecho con recursos locales pero son demasiado escasos.

Así que, por esos motivos y muchos más, me decido a iniciar esta campaña y, siempre tratando de aprovechar los recursos materiales y habilidades de cada comunidad, aportar la parte que ellos no pueden.

Necesitamos comprar cemento, muchos kg, algunas maderas para reforzar y construir nuevas vigas, placas de metal para los techos, pintura, y si consiguiéramos cubrir esa necesidad tan básica como es la de tener un edificio en condiciones, iríamos a por la segunda parte: material didáctico para facilitar la enseñanza de estos cientos y cientos de niños.

Hello, my name is Clara and on the 19th of January I arrived in Dowa District, Malawi, to work with the preschools in the rural areas.

After visiting the 28 schools and getting to know better their needs and their abilities and resources, I have decided to start this fundraising campaign to work together with the different communities to improve their reality and make life a little bit easier for many children and families.

Malawi is an extremely poor country located in the southeast of the African continent. More than half of the population lives in poverty, and among their daily difficulties are challenges such as access to clean water, sanitation and health care, as well as access to education, especially in rural areas like the one where I am located.

Nursery schools are a much neglected resource in Malawi. In many communities the building consists of four walls made of local bricks (made by the community from local soil), a few holes for windows and doors to let in light, a few logs to support the structure and dry branches for a roof. There are three seasons in Malawi: rainy season (where we are now), cold season and hot season, so there are weeks when it is impossible to attend school.

The conditions of the schools are not adequate for children, teachers and caregivers to find it a "safe place" in many occasions.

Learning materials and games are practically non-existent; communities with more resources provide materials made with local resources but they are too scarce.

So, for these reasons and many more, I decided to start this campaign and, always trying to take advantage of the material resources and skills of each community, to contribute the part they cannot.

We need to buy cement, many kg, some wood to reinforce and build new beams, iron sheets for the roofs, paint, and if we manage to cover such a basic need as having a building in conditions, we will go for the second part: didactic material to facilitate the teaching of these hundreds and hundreds of children.
