Meet Pete

Donation protected
Pete is a 10 year old Akita lab mix, adopted by his humans who adopt senior and/or special need dogs. Pete is the sixth “special” dog they have welcomed into their lives.

Pete has put his rocky past behind him and has been enjoying the good life in Fredericksburg. He is patient (children dress him up and hug him regularly), has many friends (some of whom holler “It’s PEEEETE!” while they drive by), is somewhat famous (he had a scarecrow in his likeness entered into a contest) and is, perhaps, the best dog ever.

But Pete has had a rough few weeks. After being pretty darn healthy for an older guy with a poor start in life, he suddenly developed severe pancreatitis that got worse despite treatment. It got so inflamed that it pushed against his bile duct and his bile backed up into his gallbladder and liver, causing him to become severely jaundice. He spent some time at the specialty Veterinarian hospital in Richmond, trying to treat it with drugs and ruling out all manner of cancers. After days of tests and ultrasounds, surgery became his only option.  He had successful surgery to put a stint into his gallbladder duct and to insert a feeding tube to help him eat a limited diet while he recovers. So several times a day, Pete’s humans mix up a crazy healthy liquid concoction and spend an hour or so to feed him. But he’s on the mend and his prognosis is good…he is officially cancer free!

To say this has been stressful and exhausting for Pete’s Humans is an understatement. But they love Pete and this is what they do, with good humor and true devotion.

But this year has been extra hard for Pete’s Humans. They also cared for two of their other “specials” Ellie and Ernie, who had their own challenges, providing the best until they lovingly, tearfully said their goodbyes, first to Ellie and then to Ernie this summer.

There is nothing we can do about the hurt in their hearts – but we can help offset the hit to their wallets a little bit. People have asked how they can help – this is an option. (Chocolate chip cookies are another excellent option) Pete’s vet bill is well over $8,000.

If you want to contribute, we would be so grateful.

And you need to know this about Pete’s Humans, they are “Pay It Forward” kind of people. You can trust they will find a way to multiply the good they do for dogs (and people) as a way of thanking you for supporting them now.
