On Jan 4th, this son, uncle, cousin, brother, husband, and father of 3 went in for a routine colonoscopy. It was somewhat of a joke, until it wasn't! He was diagnosed with active colon cancer and told he would need surgery to remove the section of colon affected by cancer cells.
After testing, waiting, and meeting with surgeons at Legacy Good Sam, Meechy is expecting to have a 4hr operation to remove 1/3rd of his colon. The topic of a long awaited gastric sleeve is being decided by a team of doctors who will consider doing both procedures at once.
Surgery is set for March 15th with a 3-5-day stay in the hospital and possible in-patient rehab until he can come home. Because the issue of rehab cannot be determined until time for hospital release, the family is preparing for any medical equipment and care that will be needed in the home to make Meechy's recovery the best that it can be. Decisions are being made now about the need for a hospital bed and mechanical lift chair, both items that very well may not be covered by the family's insurance. They are also looking into the cost of an in-home nurse in case rehab is denied and his care is too difficult for Beth to manage on her own. Both his height and weight play a large role in effecting every day things for average size people like getting in and out of a chair, getting to and from the bathroom, getting in and out of bed; anything using his core.
For now, Beth has accrued a week off work, as she works full time, but there are so many unknown factors in Meechy's recovery that will determine if she will need to be home longer to care for him. Part of the GoFundMe account would allow her to stay home and care for him for an additional 2wks.
The children will have to be taken care of outside of the home for 2-4wks, so this will include grocery money for them while they are in the care of others, as well as gas money to get them to and from out of area childcare.
The family is very grateful for whatever help you may be able to offer; financial or otherwise.
Money raised here will go directly into an account set aside for Meechy's care. They are trying to get things settled as securely and soon as possible to ease the financial strain that they will be facing upon his release from the hospital.
