One of our life long bestfriends Kia, and her family, learned the unfortunate news that her father now has the diagnoses of Stage IV Lung and Brain cancer in early April, 2017. As everyone knows, cancer is a very horrible and expensive disease that adds many hardships to peoples lives. Families not only have to worry about medical expenses, but personal living expenses such as a morgage and groceries. To give an example, one, five-day hospital stay costs around $70,000 with insurance only covering a portion of the expenses.
After finding out the diagnoses, her father was now unable to continue his career, which provided 80% of the income for her family. With her father only being 47 years old, her family was trying to get the most intensive care through Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, located in New York City. The travel and hotel expenses added to the already insurmountable costs of the hospital care. Her father now requiring 24 hour care, needs someone around at all times. This puts a burden on the family when it comes to their work schedules. Between extensive medical bills and personal living expenses, our close group of friends wanted to take the time to give back and help out a family in need.
We write this with a heavy heart, knowing that no family deserves to go through this. Any support goes a long way to help motivate this beautiful family to keep fighting and stay strong!
