"Help Jim in his recovery and lost wages and medical travel expenses". Jim is a loving 49 year old husband and a father. He is a very strong willed and independent man he would give the shirt of his back for anyone even if he didn't know them,and has been the provider for our family for years. He has owned his own construction business for several years and has done very well at being self-employed. On November 11th 2016 he had his right shoulder rotator cuff repaired. Then 6 weeks later he had his left shoulder rotator cuff repaired. During his recovery for both shoulder surgeries I could not take time off work so my 2 daughters (bless there little hearts took care of there dad in his recovery.) It was a very long recovery.
Then on June 29th 2017 he under went another major surgery. He had his back surgery,what we thought was going to be a fix to all of his hip pain and severe lower back pain and not feeling his feet for more than 2 years. The drs had to do surgery on his abdomin area first to seperate all his nerves. All his nerves where not where they should be so a nerve Dr seperated them and was hoping that that would get him feeling back in his feet. Then they did an incision on his back to put the hardware in for back surgery. They were unable to put rods and cages and screws in,do to all the arthritis he had in his back. So instead they did bone grafting and put hardware appliance in to hold it all togehter so it could heal. He was in the hospital for 3 days. Then he was sent home to recovery. Then our worst nightmare began.
During his recovery at home he was doing good for about 4 days .Then he just starting have severe abdominal pain and back pain just 5 days after surgery. I had called the Dr. several times and they just kept perscibing more steroids and different pain meds. It was very hard for me to watch someone I love be in so much pain to where he could not get out of the chair by himself. This went on for 6 more days. On the 11th day July 10th he called me at work and said he couldn't take the pain anymore that I had to take him to Sioux Falls that something was wrong. So I called the Dr and left work and took him to Sioux Falls to see the Dr. The ride to Sioux Falls was excrusiating pain for him. When we got to Sioux Falls he could hardly even walk.
We saw the Dr and he ordered a CT Scan to see if the hardware had moved. He was still in severe pain. Later that afternoon he was admitted back into the hospital for pain management. He had several other CT Scans and MRI'S done and blood work done. We did find out that his white count was very elevated and he had an infection. But we did not know what type of infection. The Drs then started with IV antibiotics round the clock. Not knowing what type of infection they were dealing with it was basically a trial and error of antibiotics. He was on some very strong pain meds which made him very tired so he slept quite a bit.
We found out 1 day after being admitted to the hospital that he had a very bad infection in his pelvic area. Later that day they preped him for surgery. He had a drain tube placed on his left side of his back just inches away from his back incision to drain of the infection. From the MRI image they found several pockets of infection in his pelvic area, which was causing all of his severe pain. But it then turned into a waiting game. We had to wait for the samples they took of the infection to grow out and see what type of infection we were dealing with. Days went by and endless waking hours sitting there watching someone I love so much go through severe pain and being poked and proded.
There was nothing I could do but be there to help him in anyway I knew how. He was walking with a walker with assistance from nurses and myself,which very hard for me to take in. He grew weaker and very unstead as the days went on. From the MRI's and CT Scans they did find an abnomality with his appendix and a spot on his pancreas and one on his colon. We do know that he has to have his appendix out but not sure on the date for that surgery yet. In the coming months we will find out if the hardware from back surgery needs to be changed out due to the infection. We have not found out yet about the spot on pancreas and colon. The infection has to be completely gone before he can have another surgery.
On July 16th he had a PICC Line put in for IV antibiotics to be given at home 3 times a day. I took on the role of giving those to him. I thought to myself how am I gonna do this plus work. He was sent home from the hospital on July 18th. He was on several pain meds and IV antibitics, and was sent home with walking with assistance with the walker. He has done very well with using the walker. We slowly started getting into a routine at home, which has not been easy. We both have our days and nights mixed up. But the relief of been home is wonderful. But have no idea what the future holds for us. Not knowing isthe hardest thing ever.
During his stay in the hospital I had to take a Family Medical Leave of Absence from my Job at Vern Eide Ford as a Service Advisor in Mitchell. The staff at Vern Eide has been very awesome. That was the only way I could keep my job there. But during my leave of absence being I do not have PTO built up Iam currently on leave with no pay.
Jim has a long road in his recovery,and has several scheduled Dr.s appointments scheduled in the coming weeks and months, and possibly one if not 2 more surgeries to go yet. We do not know what the future holds for him or our family. But right now we are in need of some help with Loss of wages, Travel Expenses and every day living expenses. I am very unsure of a date when I can return to work. We travel to Sioux Falls to see 3 Drs this Wednesday and hopefully we will have some answers to what lies ahead in the future.
