Medical funds for Megan Murphy

Facebook family and friends, Megan Nicole Murphy and her family need our help!

Hi, I'm Karen Tankersley a close friend of the family. My son Dillon Tankersley first met Megan Murphy in Pre-K class at Euchee Creek Elementary and they became instant friends just as I and Sharon did. Megan is now a 22 year old graduate from UGA with honors and has been accepted into medical school which starts in August. She was hospitalized about 2 weeks ago with paralysis in her legs. The doctors told the family they thought Megan could possibly have Multiple sclerosis or Guillain-Barre Syndrome. After numerous tests, doctors confirmed Megan had Guillain-Barre Syndrome.
- Guillain Barré syndrome is a disorder in which the body's immune system attacks the peripheral nervous system. The first symptoms of the disorder include varying degrees of weakness or tingling sensations in the legs. In many instances the sensations will spread to the upper body. The symptoms can continue to increase until certain muscles cannot be used or until the person is almost paralyzed. In the most severe cases the syndrome can be life threatening - potentially interfering with breathing and at times blood pressure or heart rate. There’s no cure for Guillain-Barre, but most people eventually make a full recovery. Recovery can be slow, lasting anywhere from several weeks to several years.
The doctors immediately started Megan on a round of immunoglobulin treatments. Her days and nights had its highs and its lows but now she is not doing as well as we had hoped! She is unable to take care of any basic needs at this point. Her autonomic system is now being compromised. Her blood pressure is high and her heart rate jumps up with the slightest activity and alarm goes off. Today they will start her on another more intense round of treatment, plasmapheresis. This takes her blood out and filters out the antibodies that are attacking her nervous system and then it is returned to her body. She will do this over a period of ten days. She is frightened but hopeful. I pray this round works and Megan can start recovering.

She is also having occupational, physical, respiratory, and speech therapy visits every day. This will be going on for weeks or possibly months and she may even be hospitalized for quite a long time.

Please help this family with their mounting medical bills.
