Hi. My name is Kristi Kapano and I am writing on behalf of the Pilates Teaching Community within Mt. San Antonio College. I say “Community” because over the years we have all gotten to know one another and have built friendships, support systems, and family within our Program.
This past month we have learned that one of our Family members, Laura Carmer, has been put into financial distress due to being diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma. For those of you who may not know what this is, Hodgkin's lymphoma — formerly known as Hodgkin's disease — is a cancer of the lymphatic system, which is part of your immune system. In Hodgkin's lymphoma, cells in the lymphatic system grow abnormally and may spread beyond the lymphatic system. As Hodgkin's lymphoma progresses, it compromises your body's ability to fight infection. Hodgkin's lymphoma is one of two common types of cancers of the lymphatic system. Advances in
diagnosis and treatment of Hodgkin's lymphoma have helped give people with this diagnosis the chance for a full recovery.
Laura Carmer is a Hacienda Heights native and currently resides in Upland, California
with her husband of 21 years and two beautiful daughters. She has been a part of the Pilates Community here at the College since 1999. She has completed her Teaching Certificate in Mat and Reformer and has been teaching at Center of Gravity in Claremont, California for the past 4 years. She is currently enrolled and completing her second Teaching Certificate in Cadillac, Wunda Chair and Auxillary Equipment. Teaching Pilates brings much happiness and joy to Laura. She said, “ I am always telling my clients how Pilates can heal the body, and now I am being given an opportunity to lead by example.”
Laura has a very positive outlook on the road ahead of her and intends to continue life as normal as possible in the coming days. What makes her situation unique is a tumor has formed between her heart and lungs, which makes it impossible to remove by operation. Chemotherapy is her only option. Due to complications with finances and the red tape of our insurance system it has made it nearly impossible for her to afford treatment. Remember, this is treatable and survivable. But one has to be able to get the treatment needed.
This gofundme account is to raise money to help with the cost of her treatments. We are asking for the help of our community in assisting her during this difficult time. Any donation, whether it be a penny or a dollar, will make a difference. All donations are extremely appreciated by Laura, and all of those who care about her. Thank you very much.
