Through Fred’s ordeal thus far, it was easy to ask for everyone’s thoughts and prayers, which we received in abundance. Through your love and support, we continue to embrace a life that has brought happiness to so many. But now, an equally challenging endeavor begins. Fred faces many months of intense speech, occupational, and physical therapy on his road to recovery. We set up this GoFundMe account to help cover his future medical costs in an effort to lessen his financial stress. All donations will go directly towards his medical bills. Here is a detailed account of what happened to Fred:
Fred has been battling severe Crohn's disease for most of the summer. Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that causes abdominal pain, cramping, diarrhea, fatigue, weight loss and intestinal bleeding. Fred was really struggling with Crohn’s throughout the end of September into October, so much so, that he ended up in the emergency room on October 6, 2017. He was having a lot of discomfort, couldn't eat and was having a severe headache. After two days in the hospital, he woke up with numbness in his right arm, which then proceeded to his right leg. After a CT scan, it was found that he had a blood clot in his brain (also known as a Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis or CVST). Fred was transferred to the Neuro ICU at Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia.
After only one day at Jefferson, Fred's condition started to rapidly change when his speech started to slur and the right side of his face started to droop. A CT scan revealed that the blood clot in his brain enlarged and it wasn't allowing blood to drain from the brain. As a result, it caused a blood vessel to break and leak blood into surrounding brain tissue (causing a stroke). He was rushed into emergency surgery with the hope of removing the large clot to relieve the pressure. Unfortunately, only 2/3 of the clot could be removed and during the course of that surgery, the small hemorrhage turned into a very large hemorrhage. This led to another emergency surgery to remove part of his skull (a craniotomy) to relieve pressure in the brain and to allow the brain to swell.
Fred was sedated for one week; he was on a ventilator, IV drip of many meds and had a feeding tube. During that time, he developed a blood clot in each of his legs and his body is still enduring the symptoms of Crohn's disease. The doctors were trying to prepare us for the worst, as 9 in 10 people with this magnitude of bleeding don't survive past the first week. We are happy to report that Fred beat the odds and made it past the first week. A few days ago, he was taken off the ventilator and feeding tube, and weaned from the sedation meds. He is a fighter!
Sadly, Fred is unable to talk and he can't move the right side of his body. We aren't even sure how many words he can understand. The massive stroke affected the left hemisphere of the brain where speech, language, writing and body movement are all located. Most of you know that Fred is an artist and personal trainer and this is just devastating. His neurological prognosis is still uncertain but we are hopeful that with intensive physical, occupational and speech therapy, he may regain some of what he's lost.
Again, anything that you are able to contribute would be so helpful to Fred. Let's help him get the best care possible so he can get on the road to recovery and get him back to the fun-loving guy we know and love. We know that Fred (and us!) will be forever grateful for your love and support!

I have set up Fred's mother Joanne as the beneficiary for the funds that have been donated. Fred's mther will be using these funds to pay his medical bills and rehab costs.
