Medical Expenses for Marina

Donation protected
Marina is our head chef, friend, and the farm "mom." She has been working here at Finca Bona Fide for over 8 years now, cooking a healthy and farm-fresh lunch for us that keeps us energized, happy, and healthy. She helps us whenever we need her, makes tea for us when we're sick, and just spends her time with us laughing, dancing, singing, and cooking.

A few weeks ago Marina went to the doctor for a sore throat; she was getting sick often and her neck was also swollen. The doctor found a tumor in her neck, and after further testing it was shown to be thyroid cancer. The doctor believes it has not spread from her thyroid, and they have tentatively scheduled surgery for early August–the soonest she could get an appointment.

Here in Nicaragua the healthcare system would cover the cost of a slow and long-term treatment in a hospital to shrink the tumor, but Marina wouldn't be able to work during this time. She would need to wait and hope over a period of months that the treatment was working, and she would need to spend all of her money on transportation to the hospital in Granada (roughly a 5-6 hour commute). The other option is to go to a private clinic and pay for a one-time surgery. It is less risky, faster, and has a higher chance of success, but is more expensive.

Both of these options are too expensive for her, too expensive for an average person in Nicaragua. She will need to get daycare for her three-year-old daughter, pay for transportation costs and doctors' appointments, and won't be able to work for a few weeks while she recovers. All of these expenses put together is the equivalent of years of work for a Nicaraguan family.

Here is where we need your help: while $2500 is worth years of work in Nicaragua, we believe that with the support of our friends and family we can support Marina both financially and emotionally through this scary time. There are currently nine volunteers, interns, and coordinators on the farm; if we each have ten friends who donate $10, we can accomplish this goal quickly and easily! If you donate $10, you'll help us lessen the burden on Marina and her family in what would take them years to save.

*The amount of $2500 was reached by accounting for Marina's lab work, transportation to and from the hospital, the operation and stay in a private clinic, three weeks worth of wages when she'll be in recovery, and daycare for her daughter while Marina is in the hospital.

Please help us raise money in order to make sure our farm "mom," Marina, gets the care and support that she deserves!
